Wk 12 - Final AOTW : Mahasa Soroudi

Background :

Mahasa Soroudi is an Iranian born artist who had a moderate family and surprisingly, not a strict Muslim family. Both of her parents having different interest in arts allowed Soroudi to travel to different Asian countries and learn about the different cultures. Additionally, Soroudi explains that growing up in the metropolitan city Tehran, allowed her to understand the different perspectives of the citizens of Tehran. As she stated, different parts of the city were completely different from one another (i.e.,north and south side). Her and her husband moved to Malaysia after one week after her wedding and there she was taught English. Soroudi does not have any negative views on the Islamic Revolution, although others do. This event did not affect her and her family from doing what they wanted to do and they wanted to see in the world. She received a degree in Visual Communications at Azad Art and Architecture University, Tehran in 2006. Her and her husband currently reside in the United States.

Content Analysis :

Soroudi uses lots of background and enviroment, like in the picture above, it revolves around a dock. There is water and a dock, which makes the whole work. She uses lots of different enviroments, from all over. She also uses people, humans in her work, to provide a point of humankind. Soroudi also does glass sculptures, her work has glass and usually a background such as the beach in her works. There is also her self-portraits that she uses of herself, though her works mostly revolve and enviroment and humans, usually females.

Formal Analysis :

Soroudi seems to be using humans and enviroment as some sort of connection. She wants to express her mental visions, using the elements of her mind to create works. She also may seem to use her work to convey culture, as she stated she grew up around culture and was interested in it.  Soroudi wants to use her mind to help become one with human mind and enviroment, using elements to convey in her work. She uses her epiphanies and thoughts to create these ideas, it is something she is definitely passionate about, to become one with the enviroment through mind.

Synthesis/ My Experience :

Overall, I like Soroudi's works, they are very deep and are really provoking to the mind. You can tell she is passionate about what she does and it shows in her works, it is vedy admirable. I think she has lots of potential and skill, her attitude and passion will really get her far, her works are amazing and I love them. I would definitely hang her works on my walls, they are very pleasing to the eye and to the mind, she manages to do both which is overwhelming. I think her drive on becoming one with the enviroment is very deep and it makes me think more about her works and why she does it.
