Wk 8 - AOTW : Chris Jordan

Background :

Chris Jordan is a photographic artist living in the city of Seattle. Many of Jordan’s pieces are photographs of a massive amount of garbage and mass consumption. He acquired this technique when he visited an industrial yard to look at color and sequence patterns. Jordan uses simple items, such as a plastic cup, and seeks to highlight how unaware many American consumers act. Jordan's work typically produces a strong message that embodies the idea of actions made while unconscious by members of society. The viewer is left to ponder the inevitable consequences that arise from these habits. Chris Jordan’s large-scale photographs aims to portray the concepts of consumerism in the world. This artist seeks to raise questions about the waste in society, and is successful in creating art to depict this message. Chris Jordan's images often also illustrate the natural beauty of the subjects of his creations. This includes the discarded cell phones lying in large landfills.

Content Analysis :

Jordan's work uses lots of work that revolves trash and garbage. He uses lots of pictures that revolve around animals or the enviroment, the enviroment is really dirty or trashed in the pictures. He uses animals, dead or alive, usually around human-made products. He also take lots of pictures of backgrounds and the overall enviroment, always dirty or trashed, he never uses a clean and pristine location. He also doesn't use humans or himself in photos unlike Ai Weiwei, he takes pictures of what's around him and the enviroment itself. His artwork is unique, I have never seen this type of content as work, so this was a really cool awakening.

Formal Analysis :

Chris seems to use the enviroment and animals in his works, this is followed by something dark and dirty. He has works of animals that are dead, impacted by the man-made objects. Animals are stuffed, have eaten, human objects and die. There is also the enviroment pictures such as junkyards or places full of junk, it shows the influence and power of his message. His message is to tell the public about the issue of us humans impacting the enviroment and those animals who live in it. That what we do has serious consequences on everything around it, using grotesque things to represent his pictures. It's super

empowering, it's meant to give people a rude awakening, which it did for me.

Synthesis / My Experience :

I really like his work, it's very interesting and  eye-opening. I think it's so powerful and brings so many emotions and thoughts to my head. It needs to be spread, his work needs to be seen and he should get

more recognition cause I have never heard of this guy. He is really conveying a strong message, it is crucial to get this across the the public, so kudos to him. His work is amazing and makes people worry about their future and what changes they should make to prevent these consequences through his work. Overall it is so empowering and scary, he knows the problem and is using his art to portray the real issue in our society.
